Ayshford Sandford, Madrid, March 12, 1844, on front flyleaf of both volumes. ***** A contemporary account (much praised by Ticknor) of the War of the Spanish Succession, which began in 1701 with the refusal of Austria to recognise Philip V as the first Bourbon king of Spain and which ended in 1714 with the integration of Catalonia into Spain and the loss to Spain of her possessions in Europe (Belgium, Luxembourg, Milan, Sardinia and Naples). The author, a champion of the Bourbon cause and a supporter of Castile against Catalonia, was directly involved in military engagements in Italy. After the war, he became ambassador to Genoa and later to the Hague.
